Calf

For calves we offer a line of quality textured feeds that can easily be tailored to fit the calf and farmer’s needs. A general rule-of-thumb is that dairy calves need more protein to build a taller, leaner frame, while beef calves should switch to lower protein levels sooner to prevent them from gaining too much height and allow them to be more filled out.

The textured feed allows the animal’s rumen to develop, which helps them later in their growth when they need to be able to process the nutrients from their feed to produce milk or meat. We also add Rumensin to our calf feeds to aid this development as well as to prevent coccidiosis, a common threat to livestock.

During the warmer months, typically April through October, we use ClariFly in our feeds to suppress the maturation of fly larvae in the manure. This will not affect the animal in anyway other than to make their stalls more comfortable as the adult fly population is greatly reduced.

Be sure to provide adequate amounts of fresh, clean, cool water at all times. Animals at different stages should be penned or pastured separately as they will have different needs and larger animals may take more feed than is necessary away from small ones.

WARNING: Rumensin is dangerous for horses. Do not allow horses to consume our calf feeds.

 20% Calf Starter Elite

Intended to get calves started as rapidly as possible, this feed is designed to be fed alongside milk replacer and then as a complete feed for about two weeks after they have been weaned around eight weeks old. This is an important step because calves struggle with sudden changes and will lose days or even weeks of growth if stressed too much. Try to limit changing too many things at once. This feed can be used for both dairy calves and beef calves. It uses steam rolled corn and yeast to aid digestion and gut health. Two weeks after weaning, dairy calves can be introduced to our 18% Calf Starter/Grower, while beef calves can drop right to the 17% Calf Grower.

 18% Calf Starter/Grower

For calves that are starting out, this is a complete feed to be fed to dairy calves about two weeks after weaning and up until about four months of age, at which time they can be switched to 17% Calf Grower. It also has plenty of use as the starter for beef calves at a more economical rate. If feeding to beef calves as a starter, they can still be switched to 17% Calf Grower at ten weeks of age. It also uses steam rolled corn and yeast to aid digestion and gut health.

 17% Calf Grower

Once the calf is started and really growing, this is the next step in our feeding program. Dairy calves should begin using this feed around four months of age and beef calves can begin using it at ten weeks. At six months old, dairy calves should be switched directly to the 14% Grower from our beef line until they calve. Please see the 14% Beef Grower section on the Beef page for details on transitioning between textured and ground feeds. Beef calves should use this feed until about four months of age. This feed uses rolled corn to progess their digestion and also contains yeast to help with gut health.

 15% Calf Grower

This is the last step for the beef calves before switching to the beef feeds. Begin feeding this to the calves around four months old and up to six months of age, at which point they can be transitioned to the 14% Beef Grower using the procedure described in that section on the Beef page. This feed uses rolled corn to finish the development of their digestive system and yeast for gut health.
